Evil House #14
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Christopher Pike
Average review score:

Pretty good
This book was average compared to the other Spooksville books. It wasn't bad or anything, it just wasn't the best. The book takes place on Hallowe'en, and I liked the idea behind the costumes in the evil house(I won't say anything more concerning that, because i don't want to spoil it for you). If you're a fan of spooksville, i recommend you read this one, but if you've never read any of the series before, i recommend you read one of the better books first.

Fishing Bass-Ackwards: Coming Down the Pike With Off-The-Walleye Humor
Published in Paperback by Fireside (April, 1991)
Author: Jack Ohman
Average review score:

Fishing Funnies?
Having glanced at a friend's copy of this book, I have decided to buy TWO copies of it: one for myself and one for my father, a grizzled old fisherman if there ever was one. The man is a difficult laugh, but I can generally guess his reation from mine. This book, particularly the "Know Thy Enemy" section should get a few REAL laughs...

Intriguing
I found this book at an old book vendor I like to visit on saturdays, to kill time, about two months ago. Since then I have almost every book he has written from the young adult series and up. This book is a very captivating page turner. It will definately keep you going with it's strage twist and formalities with the characters. You have to get this book! You'll never guess the ending! Also, try reading 'Remember Me' and 'The Immortal'. You'll be addicted, just like me!

Insight Guide National Parks West
Published in Paperback by Langenscheidt Publishing Group (15 September, 1999)
Authors: Jeffery Pike, Insight Guides, and Discovery Channel
Average review score:

Many Beautiful Photographs
This guide's best feature is the beautiful photographs. They make you want to get in your car and go! Besides pictures of landscapes, there are also pictures of wildlife, and people engaged in various activities (camping, hiking, skiing, etc.). The guide covers parks in California & the Pacific, The Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest. Unfortunately, the entrance costs for the parks are not given; but there are park phone numbers & addresses so you can call or write at your own convenience (or expense!) This book is written for the International traveler. It contains information about US time zones, currency, passports, etc. There are some maps included, but the traveler will probably need more detailed maps if he intends to visit these locations.

Intonation of American English
Published in Paperback by University of Michigan Press (January, 1945)
Author: K. L. Pike
Average review score:

good book on stylized spoken intonation
The book contains several interesting examples of utterances which tend to be spoken with the same intonation in American English. For instance, children tease each other by singing something like "Johnny has a girlfriend" on so-so-mi-la-so-mi.

Although none of the writers on stylized spoken intonation attempt to identify the musical pitches which they refer to, a reader with musical training might be able to identify those pitches. [...] and see if you agree that the four pitches of American stylized spoken intonation are do, mi, so, and la.

Magnum Opus or the Great Work: Or the Great Work: The Complete Ritual Work of Scottish Rite Freemasonry
Published in Paperback by Kessinger Publishing Company (March, 1997)
Author: Albert Pike
Average review score:

a good reference
The lectures are actually earlier versions of what went into _morals and dogma_. so what makes this interesting are the rituals... but there is no 33 degree ritual unfortunately. I have heard the ones used today are a lot different. kinda pricy for a photocopy reprint, but still well worth it.

The Man Without Qualities Vol. 2: Into the Millennium, from the Posthumous Papers
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (December, 1996)
Authors: Robert Musil, Sophie Wilkins, and Burton Pike
Average review score:

"the man without qualities" has some qualities
this 1800 page book has been placed in the same league as "the remembrance of things past" and joyce's "ulysses". if one is not put off by musil's antisemitism, and unnecessarily longwinded, only somewhat interesting, conversations, one is more than rewarded by musil's keen obervational skills and ability to portray highly ideosyncratic, pathological, psychological states. musil is a genius at capturing the subtleties of sexual relations and their consequences. in my opinion, musil lacks the basic humanity of both proust and joyce; the book would be vastly improved if a good editor eliminated a good deal of the tiresome discussions.

Pike's Peak: A Mining Saga
Published in Paperback by Swallow Pr (December, 1987)
Author: Frank Waters
Average review score:

Three Generations of A Mining Family
This is a compelling account of the Rogier family, who moved to the Pike's Peak, Colorado region soon after the Civil War. The character development of the family members is intricate, but not tedious. Each person is real, and the accounts of their lives during the mining boom in Pike's Peak, the Union Organization of the Miners, the entry of big business to buy up all the mining property are just like reading an eyewitness account. The family are strong, proud, and humbled at the same time by the spectre of brooding Pike's Peak that remains timeless and immovable. How they look at the mountain, and the progress of civilization all around them is a good glimpse for readers on the actual experiences of the early pioneers of the Western United States. The descriptions of the beauty and primitiveness of the territories are just as if the reader was there. Also, the writer's interpretation of Indian mysticism is interesting, as he explains the native American's oneness with the earth. Very satisfying reading.
